The Cursed is a new horror film from Sean Ellis, full of dark gothic imagery, bleak set pieces and the occasional jump scare. It’s a film full of atmosphere and gorgeous period costumes and props, it’s just too bad the story doesn’t match up with it.
Full disclosure I saw this film at the 2021 Sundance film festival when it was still titled eight for silver, the effects and score have been redone for this release so I will not be commenting on those aspects of the film.
The film is an attempt to make a spin on the tried and true werewolf mythology. Which it does succeed at but the werewolf moments are few and far between you forget you aren’t watching a gritty Downton Abbey reboot.
The film is boring, lacking in moments that truly drive the plot forward and instead just bogs it down. This causes some pacing issues and a lack of urgency that the film so desperately needs.
While it’s not the worst way to kill some time there are much better and more memorable werewolf movies to check out first.
